Match Report

Wisbech Town remain in the hunt for the United Counties League title after a 4-2 win over Northampton O.N. Chenecks but it’s too close to call with just two points separating them in fifth place from current leaders Holbeach United.

Illness, injury, suspension, and work commitments meant the Fenmen were only able to name two substitutes and one of those was goalkeeper Sam Vince.

Billy Smith put Wisbech in front in the 11th minute, latching onto an excellent Sam Murphy pass before hitting an early shot past the Chenecks keeper.

The lead was doubled nine minutes before the break, Adam Millson firing home from eight yards after good work from Michael Frew.

Four minutes into the second half, Smith looped a header over the keeper from Alex Beck’s cross to put the visitors firmly in the driving seat and Beck added a fourth from Millson’s cross after 63 minutes.

Vince replaced Frew with nine minutes remaining and became the first Wisbech Town goalkeeper to play outfield since the days before substitutes existed. The home side scored twice in the final few minutes, but it was too little, too late to do anything except dent the Fenmen’s goal difference.
