Match Report

Wisbech Town’s quest for silverware ended in disappointment as they went down 2-1 to former manager Brett Whaley’s Yaxley in the United Counties League Knockout Cup Final.

The game was delayed for 50 minutes late in the first half as ex-Wisbech player Matt Sparrow collided with an advertising hoarding and had to been taken to hospital.

Within two minutes of the resumption Yaxley took the lead through top scorer Dan Cotton. The Wisbech defence failed to clear their lines and the Cuckoos striker nicked the ball and found the net for the 47th time this season.

Liam Adams scored a spectacular 22-yard with his weaker left foot three minutes after the hour mark before Yaxley captain Wayne Morris – another ex-Fenman – was shown a straight red card for a stamp on Adams.

The Fenmen were now in the ascendency and pushing for another goal but their cause was not helped by the dismissal of Michael Frew for a handball which earnt him a second yellow card. Adams had a one-on-one chance with Aaron Butcher but the former Wisbech keeper blocked the effort.

The winning goal in the 83rd minute was scored by yet another player with Wisbech connections - Ross Watson - who had lost the 2011-12 UCL KO Cup Final whilst at King’s Lynn Town. He beat Sam Vince from close range from a Cotton free kick to record Yaxley’s first UCL KO Cup win for 11 seasons.
